Unblock Netflix – Use a VPN

Netflix is a great way to watch streaming video over the Internet.  There are over 33 million subscribers in the US alone and over 50 million customers world wide.  Netflix is available to people located in the United States, Canada, parts of South America, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom.  But what if you travel or live outside of your home country?  Or what if you are inside one of these countries and your local internet service is throttling (slowing down) or even blocking your access? Is this video on-demand service out of reach for you?  The short answer the these questions is most certainly not.  Get a VPN service.

Using a VPN

netflix-unblockedA Virtual Private Network (VPN) is one of the most efficient ways to bypass the geographical restriction that many websites like Netflix have. Once you establish a connection to a server located in the area you would like to have access, you then appear to the website as though you have connected locally thus unblocking the restriction.

A VPN is also extremely effective at bypassing local throttling and blocking.  Sometimes businesses, schools and other places block certain websites.  A business might not want its employees watching videos while at work. Many schools restrict student from access to social and other non academic websites.  A VPN can easily get around this block and even hide the contents of a persons internet connection.

How Does a VPN Help?

A VPN helps people connect to Netflix two ways.  For people who are being restricted because they are located outside of the United States or another country a VPN hides their location. Netflix and most websites that block based off of location can tell by your IP address roughly where you are connecting to the Internet from.  Want to see what the websites see?  Click here to see where you IP address is showing up on the map.  So when a person connects to a VPN server first all of their traffic is routed through that server.  This masks the location of the person on the other end of the server.  The website believes you are located wherever that VPN server is located.  So if the server is located in an unblocked area then most websites like Netflix will be unblocked.  Connect to a server located in New York and Netflix assumes you are in New York and lets the videos flow.

If you are already connecting to the Internet from a location that is not blocked by Netflix but still cannot access the content or your connection is very slow then you are likely being blocked locally.  A VPN helps people who are being blocked by their local internet provider by encrypting their connection.  When you use a VPN service you data is encrypted on your computer before it ever leaves.  It then travels to the VPN server where it is unencrypted and sent out onto the Internet.  This means that your Internet service provider can't filter out any websites your accessing or block them.  All they ever see is an encrypted bunch of unreadable mess that travels from you out to a server somewhere. This works great for any business, university, and even many governments that block website access.  One word of caution.  If you are on a computer that is monitored by a local network administer, then they may still retain some ability to “look over your solder” and see what you are doing on their computer.  If you are on your computer on their network then a VPN connection will set you free.
